The 75th Anniversary of VE Day is a time of celebration, as well as solemn reflection on the sacrifice, courage and determination of an extraordinary generation to whom we owe an enormous debt of gratitude.

Prior to the recent Covid-19 outbreak, the Parish Council were planning to host an invitation only Afternoon Tea for all those who participated in the war effort, whatever their contribution and however young they may have been at the time! It was our intention to host this event on the VE Day Bank Holiday during the annual Plaistow Maypole Fete.

Regretfully, due to social distancing and government guidelines, Plaistow and Ifold Parish Council have cancelled its VE Day celebration plans. Likewise, Plaistow Pre-School has also cancelled this year's Maypole Fete fundraising event.

Nonetheless, the Parish Council has sent a card of recognition, remembrance and thanks to eleven residents, identified by the community, as having participated in the war effort. The card was designed by the children of Plaistow Pre-School and can be enjoyed by visiting the Local History Exhibition and/or Children's Activities pages.

The Parish Council hopes to be able to make new commemorative plans, once the current situation is under control, so that the community can officially mark this anniversary. In the meantime we hope that you enjoy the local history exhibition – our thanks to the Plaistow Ifold and Kirdford Local History Society for all their hard work and effort in putting it together under difficult circumstances.
